Planting bare root Knockout Roses with confidence:
Bare root roses should be planted in late winter for warm climates and very early spring in cooler climates. One of the most common mistakes we often see new gardeners make when planting bare root material is waiting to late in the season to plant. If the ground is thawed and you can dig a hole then it’s time to plant! The chart below is our suggested planting times for each USDA gardening zone.
STEP 1: As soon as your plants arrive unpack and inspect for broken canes or black colored roots. Prune these back to the healthy tissue and then immediately plunge the roses into a bucket of water. Leave the plants submerged in water for at least 24 hours. One of the most important steps to ensure success with bare root roses is to never let the plant dry out before getting it into the ground.
STEP 2: Find a spot for your new Knockout Rose that receives at least 5 hours of full sun. Dig a hole approximately 18 inches deep by 18 inches wide. For best results it’s always a good idea to amend your soil with a good quality compost or planting mix. We also recommend adding a handful of blood meal, a handful of bone meal and 3 tablespoons of Epson salts. Never use a dry or granular commercial fertilizer at time of planting. Form a mound of the soil mixture in the bottom of the hole.
STEP 3: Position the rose on the soil mound mixture. Work the remaining soil around the root system making sure to fill in any air spaces. Firm the soil around the plant until the hole is 3/4 of the way full.
STEP 4: To help the soil settle pour in a bucket full of water, let it settle and then refill with water for a second time. Prune the canes so that only 8 inches remain.
STEP 5: To help prevent the canes from dying out form a 6 inch mound of soil over the plant. Buds will begin to sprout in about two weeks at which time you should remove the mounded soil to expose all the canes.
